Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC)
is located right in the center of Kuala Lumpur and 20 minutes from Palace of the Golden Horses.
A visit to the Petronas Twin Towers or KL Tower is a must on any travel itinerary in Kuala Lumpur, but new attractions such as the city's first commercial aquarium, Aquaria KLCC and established ones, such as the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, should not be missed.
The Petronas Twin Towers
The Petronas Twin Towers is the second highest structure in the world, at 451.9-meters high. Consisting of 88-floors, the Twin Towers are a remarkable architectural demonstration of Islamic art fusing with contemporary design styles. The Towers sit upon a 120-meter deep concrete foundation, built upon what used to be a popular race track in the city. Nestled between the towers is the popular shopping mall Suria KLCC as well as the Philharmonic Orchestra Theatre Hall and the Petrosains Discovery Centre. On the grounds fronting the towers, a well-landscaped park and garden provide refreshment and recreation for visitors and local residents of Ampang area. In this beautiful park, there are paved jogging paths, water coolers and rows of neatly-trimmed flowering shrubs and bushes. For visitors wanting a view from the top of the Twin Towers, the sky-bridge is open for visitors, but only to the first 1,400 people each day. The passes are free to walk the 58-meter long bridge which is open from 9am to 7pm daily, except on Mondays when it is closed.
The Kuala Lumpur Tower, also known as 'KL Tower' or 'Menara KL', is the country's highest telecommunication tower and the fifth tallest in the world at 421-meters. It sits on top of a hill on Bukit Nanas, overlooking the city skyline and complementing the Twin Towers by the side. Besides its telecommunication purpose, the tower also serves as a observatory to look out for the crescent moon to mark the beginning of the Muslim month of Ramadhan.
After a short climb or drive up the hill, visitors will reach the base of the tower, where there are restaurants and souvenir shops to explore. After paying a small fee and a ticket counter, you can ride up a high-speed lift all the way to the observatory deck at the top. Here, visitors can walk in a full-circle around the deck to view the surrounding city scenery, and even peer through telescopes placed on stands. Directly above by one floor is a fancy revolving restaurant that serves local and international cuisine, buffet-style.
Petrosains Discovery Centre
The Petrosains Discovery Centre is located at the top floor of Suria KLCC shopping centre. It functions as an interactive gallery of exhibits that is dedicated to explaining the petroleum industry and science of oil mining in a fun way. Hence, this is a good place for families to visit, especially with young children.
Visitors begin with a ride in an oil-drop shaped vehicle and are brought through a sequence of simulated scenery of seas, mountains and rainforests to explain the nature of petroleum's creation. After that, they can explore other attractions such as the cartoon village; essentially a children's fantasy area using petroleum as a theme and the geotime diorama; where visitors can see the sights and sounds of prehistoric times, including a singing dinosaur!
